2008 Southeastern Team Championship
The 2008 Southeastern Team Championship teams from Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina and Mississippi arrived at Dancing Rabbit Golf Course in Philadelphia, MS October 19th ready for competition on a beautifully manicured golf course under perfect fall weather conditions. Team Alabama marched out with their state flag waving proudly joining all of the other states for opening ceremony led by majestic bag pipers and welcome speeches from SWATCA and all state captains. The initial blind draws were held that Sunday night and the competition was on for Monday morning Fourball pairings.
Team Alabama played beautifully from tee to green but ran into some “frozen putters” leaving us trailing with only 1 point out of a possible 4 points. Florida had a fantastic Day 1 scoring all 4 points to take the lead. Mississippi won 3 points, North Carolina 2 and Tennessee 0.
Day 2 was met with Foursome matches and although Team Alabama split their matches and won 2 points, Florida again made a clean sweep to take a commanding lead after the first 2 days of play with 8 points. Mississippi had 5, North Carolina 3 ½, Alabama 3, and Tennessee ½ point.
Day 3 of singles matches showed exactly what Team Alabama players were made of. They all played hard and managed to make everyone sit up and take notice as they brought in 4 quick points while Florida and Mississippi were winning some and losing some. It looked like Team Alabama was making a move as they won 5 of their 8 matches.
At the end of the day, Florida won first with a total of 12 points, Mississippi was second with 10 ½ points, Alabama came in third with 8 points, North Carolina had 7 and Tennessee had 2 ½. The final point totals do not really show how close and exciting it got as the last few matches on the golf course came down to deciding the 2008 Champion. Congratulations to Florida.
At the closing ceremony I was overwhelmed when I received the 2008 Margaret Welsh Spirit Award voted on by the players, social members and supporters of SWATCA. This award is a memorial to one of SWATCA’s founding members, Margaret Welsh, who passed away in 2003. It is an honor I will always cherish.
Team Alabama was represented by Harriet Cauthen, Emily Crocker, Missy Gooden, Lea Green, Tami Green, Kathy Hartwiger, Judi Jehle, Chris Spivey and Susan West. You would have all been proud of them. They played their hearts out for Alabama and represented our state beautifully on and off the golf course. A special thanks to our cheerleaders Mary Dean Gray, Ann Watlington and Janie Little, and also thanks to our SWATCA Representative Jo Ann Miller.
I am so pleased to announce I have been asked to serve as captain for Team Alabama in 2009 so, please, if you have an interest in playing for Team Alabama in 2009, send me your name, address, phone number and email address to csmarr1@aol.com. I will be getting in touch with everyone when the 2009 dates and site are announced by SWATCA.
GO TEAM ALABAMA!!!
Sincerely, Chris Marr 2008 Captain
