Congratulations to Chris Marr on receiving the WAGA Special Award at the 2008 Amateur Championship at Timberline. The Special Award is given, by the WAGA Board of Directors, to honor a person who has gone "above and beyond" in service. It expresses the gratitude and appreciation of the entire organization.
Chris developed an early love for golf when she started playing as a child. In turn, she has helped and encouraged many young girls to play this wonderful game, through her many years of commitment to the Junior Girls Program.
A successful businesswoman with husband and family, Chris still found the time and energy to serve as Presi-dent of her Ladies Golf Association, as WAGA Area 5 Director, and as Vice-President in charge of the 1997 Amateur Championship.
In an era of private clubs traditionally dominated by men, Chris not only held several positions on the board, but in 2001 was elected as the first woman to become President of Heron Lakes Country Club in Mobile.
One of Chris’s greatest joys is being Captain of the Alabama Southeastern Women’s Golf Team. She spends many hours traveling and observing potential team members to select the most qualified individuals to represent our state. Chris’s personal dedication and boundless enthusiasm has helped lead the team to victory.
Another of Chris’s fondest achievements has been the success of the Scholarship Foundation Trust. Chris is one of the founding members and original trustees. Having held all positions on the board, she currently presides as Chairman. Under Chris’s direction, this scholarship fund continues to grow and will help many deserving young women to pursue their education dreams.
This prestigious award has been long overdue for a woman who has been such an avid supporter, tireless fundraiser and committed participant of all aspects of WAGA activities for so many years.
